Eloise Reyes, an attorney, educator and businesswoman, is using her experience and passion to run for election for California State Assembly of District 47. Reyes, who was born and raised in Colton, worked and held three jobs to get through San Bernardino Valley College and University of Southern California. She later received a law degree from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. After briefly working for a big firm in Los Angeles, Reyes said she returned home and became the first Latina in the Inland Empire to open her own law firm and has practiced law for more than 30 years. In 2015, she also served as an adjunct professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Reyes said she firmly believes that the Inland Empire should be a place where families can stay and succeed. “We must protect our workers and ensure that a 21st century economy provides good paying jobs for our residents,” she said. “We must protect our children by helping to foster safer streets. Our retirees must receive the benefits they have worked their entire lives for and our seniors must be able to live independently.” With a love for community, Reyes said she wants to see it prosper and be represented well. “Residents of the 47th district deserve to have an option and they need to have someone who will fight for them and putting the interest of the Inland Empire above the interest of Sacramento.” Reyes said she has always placed a high emphasis on people and helping them move forward and out of difficult situations. She said she sees the need for improvement including finding jobs for the community, ensuring safety, providing education for students, taking care of seniors and veterans and caring about the environment. “I want our children to walk to school the way I did and have their parents feel that their kids are okay walking to school and playing outside.” One goal she said she has for education is to make the first two years of college free for students, which may help them earn a two-year degree to transfer into a university, gain education in a trade school or help students earn a certificate. Another area Reyes has a concern for is the veterans and senior population. She said she has spent a lot of time with seniors and will continue to seek their input. “We need to be sure that we have a way to take care of the mental and medical health of our seniors,” Reyes said. “We cannot simply accept that 22 veterans commit suicide because of the effects of their time in the military. That’s our responsibility and we need to do more for our veterans.” Reyes said voters should vote for her because she is not one who can be bought; one of the things that Reyes said makes her different is that she has not previously held an elected office. Reyes also has held many board positions including being a board member of the San Bernardino Valley College Foundation, The Brightest Star Foundation and Children's Spine Foundation, the National Orange Show and is the vice president of the Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association.
