In Loving Memory of Marcia L. Johansen

Marcia L. Johansen, 82, died peacefully at her home in Winston –Salem, N.C. on March 3rd surrounded by her family. She was born and raised near Lac Du Flambeau, Wisconsin, where she met and married a dashing young man, William N. Johansen, whom she shared her life and love with for the next 63 years. They were blessed with a daughter, Sharon, and a son, Robert. Marcia and William moved their young family to Grand Terrace, California in 1958 where Marcia completed her education while working full time and raising her family. As a member of the Psi Chi chapter of the National Honor Society, she graduated California State College in San Bernardino with a Master’s Degree in Psychology. With a desire to meet the needs in the community Marcia served wholeheartedly as Executive Directorof the Central Valley Mental Health Association where she developed multiple programs. She was instrumental in creating a shelter for abused women and children which became known as Option House, as well as bringing about changes in the Short & Doyer laws to enable funding of domestic violence shelters. In 1984 Marcia was selected to be a member of the San Bernardino County Grand Jury. Her contribution being so valuable that she was the first juror to have the distinction of being asked to serve an additional year. Marcia then focused her skills and tireless perseverance to establishing the Senior Center in Grand Terrace. She was recognized for her organization of senior services and activities which lead to the first Senior Center built in Grand Terrace, where she served as president for several years. Marcia’s husband, daughter, son, granddaughter and grandson were devoted to her and honored to be by her side during her illness. She will be greatly missed by many as the world is a better place due to her dedication and service to others, surely a life well lived.
