A short jaunt on the scenic and winding Grand Terrace Road will take you to the local visual and performing arts magnet school, Terrace View Elementary. While someone unfamiliar with the unassuming façade of the educational facility may picture scores of students laden with notebooks tackling reading, writing and arithmetic, it is a surprise wonderland of talented students, parents and volunteers that attend and support this school in the performance of a Broadway-level production each year. For the ninth year in a row on April 21, 22 and 23, 2016, Terrace View Elementary will present a star performance, this year: Disney’s The Little Mermaid, performed through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). Geri Marquez, a kindergarten teacher at Terrace View is in charge of the production, explains that the purpose of the yearly play is to bring the students to different levels of proficiency in acting, costume designing, set building, and other behind the scene skills needed in the music and theatre industry. “Each year in December our school holds auditions for the upcoming play,” said Marquez, “and we draw quite a high level of talent from throughout the area. Many well-known actors come to the open casting call and take part in these productions year after year.” While the rehearsals and set preparations begin at Terrace View, all of the hustle and bustle will soon move to Colton High School, where the 1,000+ seat auditorium will be home to the 2016 The Little Mermaid production. This year’s show will include flying cast members, thanks to Flying by Foy from Las Vegas, Nevada, and a live professional orchestra will provide the musical score throughout the performances. These Broadway-level shows are always sold out quickly, so anyone interested in seeing the many talents of the Terrace View Elementary students, parents and staff should call (909) 586-5792 for tickets or more information. Tickets will be $12 presale, and $15 at the door.
