SAN BERNARDINO>> As part of Cal State San Bernardino’s commitment to help students graduate sooner and increase graduation rates, the university will encourage eligible seniors to take classes this summer by offering funding through a specially created $1 million grant that will pay for up to 12 units of summer tuition.

The CSUSB Graduation Initiative Grant was created at the direction of university President Tomás D. Morales in response to the California State University’s Graduation Initiative 2025, the system’s plan to increase graduation rates and eliminate the achievement gap for the university’s 475,000 students across its 23 campuses.

“We are committed to working with our students, especially our seniors, to help them graduate sooner and in a timely basis,” Morales said. “This grant will ultimately save them thousands of dollars and reduce their student debt.”

The grant will be led and coordinated within the CSUSB College of Extended Learning. More than 1,500 students are considered eligible to receive grants, said CEL Dean Tatiana Karmanova.

“In addition to offering financial incentives, we have worked with campus departments to increase the number of sections offered for high-demand and impacted classes,” Karmanova said. “Taking courses in the summer benefits everyone. Students can stay on track with graduation goals, and there are more seats available for incoming students in the fall. The completion of their degree also benefits our local community as CSUSB prepares students to enter the workplace.”

Financial aid is available to qualifying students, Karmanova added.

Registration for summer session opened May 8, 2017, and students are encouraged to register early.

In addition to administering the summer session for the CSUSB campus, the College of Extended Learning helps learners of all ages achieve continuing education goals by providing access to University degrees, certificate programs, STEM camps, professional development, and personal enrichment.
