COLTON>> Alberto Avalos from Colton High School and Daniel Ojeda from Grand Terrace High School represented the Colton American Legion Post 155 at the 2016 American Legion Boys State Conference. The conference was held at Sacramento State University for a week-long event that 900 young men participated in. The Boys State program is sponsored by the American Legion to promote citizenship, leadership and an understating of the structure of government. According to the American Legion website, participants learn the rights, privileges and responsibilities of franchised citizens. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law-enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreational programs. One delegate is selected from each high school and candidates are recommended by the Junior Class Counselor for the interview process. Avalos and Ojeda will be presented with their participation certificates at the Colton American Legion Post 155 on Wednesday, Oct. 12.
