SCAN Health Plan, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Norton Younglove Community Center teamed up for a necessity bag giveaway for local seniors at the Norton Younglove Community Center in Highgrove. SCAN provided bags for seniors that included full-sized containers of shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, shaving cream, Q-tips, and other essential hygiene products. There to assist in giving bags away to locals was Jacqueline Lauder, MSG Community Outreach Gerontologist from SCAN Health Plan. She explained that “By having these much-needed basic care products, it helps local seniors to live a life of autonomy and dignity.” As costs for these products have steadily risen in the last years, it is becoming more difficult for some to purchase these items. Local senior Shirley Chapman said that she has been coming to the center for 20 years and that she liked the bags Scan was giving out. Chapman said the products help her a lot and that they are very much appreciated. Also there to give back was Second Harvest Food Bank, with their program “Brown Bag,” a program designed to help seniors receive nutritious groceries at affordable prices. Norton Younglove Community Center manager Sherri Morris-Logan and activity specialist Leila Santamaria both expressed gratitude towards the organizations and shared their opinions that the need for events like these is great.
