In an in-depth interview, Josie Gonzalez, a seasoned public servant, reflected on her years of service and the guiding principles that have shaped her career. Throughout the conversation, Gonzalez emphasized the importance of communication, collaboration, and dedication to serving the public.

From the outset, she made it clear that her approach to government is rooted in the idea that elected officials are public servants first. "We are there to keep the door of communication open," she said, highlighting the vital role of accessibility in leadership. Gonzalez believes that public servants should be there for people when they are uncertain or overwhelmed by unexpected challenges. “When people don’t know what to do because the sight of a crack of lightning came and hit them… a public servant is there to say, ‘Tell me what it is you need. I will help you in any way I can.’”

A central theme of the conversation was Gonzalez’s focus on teamwork and the interconnectedness of elected officials. She stressed that when officials engage in internal conflicts, the public suffers the most. "When we bicker and fight or there’s jealousy or territorialism, that service to the public dies." Her belief in collaboration has been crucial to her success, allowing her to work with others to achieve meaningful progress for her community.

Reflecting on her accomplishments, Gonzalez spoke with pride about the projects she has spearheaded over the years. “I’m especially proud of the fact that... the voters have given me this opportunity to serve,” she said, acknowledging the trust placed in her by the public. One of her significant achievements was delivering three libraries and numerous affordable housing units, ensuring access to essential services for the community. She was also integral in developing new housing developments, including the Sierra Lakes community in Fontana. Gonzalez vividly recalled the early days of the project, describing how the area was once a vast open land, transformed into a thriving neighborhood through her collaboration with developers.

Another milestone was her involvement in the Southwest Industrial Plan (SWIP) in South Fontana, which saw the construction of critical infrastructure like the Sierra Avenue Overpass and the expansion of commercial and industrial zones. "Without this kind of relationship building, understanding, and common goals, the people will not benefit," she said, underscoring the value of long-term planning and partnerships.

For Gonzalez, the ultimate goal of public service is to build strong communities where people can live, work, and thrive. She spoke passionately about creating homes that allow families to stay close, preventing children from having to move away because of a lack of affordable housing. “Everything is interconnected in building strong communities,” she explained, adding that a shared commitment to common goals is key to achieving lasting progress.

As she reflected on her career, one sentiment stood out: her love for the people she serves. "The best part is I love people, I like getting to know people, and it feels so doggone good to solve issues." This genuine passion for helping others has been the driving force behind her efforts, ensuring that she leaves a legacy of service, collaboration, and community-building.

For Josie Gonzalez, public service is not just a career—it is a calling, one that she has answered with dedication, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people she serves.
