Grand Terrace Senior Center Celebrates Marge Owens' Birthday

Marge Owens celebrated her 83rd birthday with family and friends, enjoying cake and listening to live music provided by the band, Southern Star, last Friday at the Grand Terrace Senior Center. Fifty people attended Owens' birthday celebration and throughout the event, several raffle prizes were handed out and lunch was provided. Dorthy Alzen and Carmen Canela, who volunteer every Monday and Friday at the Senior Center, were signing people in and handing out raffle tickets at the front door. Girard Dunn, who has lived in the Blue Mountain Senior Village with his wife, Ruth, for the past three years, was eating cake and enjoying the birthday festivities, watching the various couples dance in the front of the room to the live music provided. Jane Haines, who has been active in the center since 1984 and currently serves as the president of the Grand Terrace Senior Center, was helping the event run smoothly. “They [Marge and her husband Paul] have been very active with the Senior Center and would come in for lunch during their breaks with the Grand Terrace Citizen Patrol," said Haines. JoAnn Johnson was in attendance and she has been with the Grand Terrace Senior Center since 1991. She served as the manager of the Information and Referral Office until she stepped down in January 2014. “It’s a very special program," Johnson said. "Usually [we have programs] in the form of music but not usually this much or this big." Marge Owens shared that she had a good time dancing with her husband during the musical performance. They have been married for 64 years and have been involved with the center for years. “It’s a very pleasant Senior Center and has very welcoming seniors," Marge said. Her brother Virgil Fulton and niece, Melissa Fulton, were there to help celebrate her special day.
