The loud oohs and awes from the young excited audience could be heard throughout Grand Terrace City Hall, as children and their parents were presented with exotic animals from around the world. In celebration of the kickoff of the county's summer reading program, "Excavate Something Big," animals from the Wild Life Company were brought in by animal expert Jessica Larios for a show and tell. A baby alligator, pygmy porcupine, Boa constrictor and the crowd favorite, Red Tegu Lizard were just a few of the animals Larios brought in for the occasion. Children were delighted by the unveiling of each animal, as their parents furiously snapped photos on their devices. Children ranging anywhere from 10 months to 10 years were enthralled seeing animals from far off continents.
Pet expert Larios has been with the San Diego-based Wild Life Company for the past fourteen years, traveling throughout southern California showing these animals off at library events and school assemblies. Many of the company's animals were rescued from owners that obtained them illegally or facilities that could no longer care for them. The company provides a home for these animals.
As a mother, Larios understands the importance of teaching children to appreciate animals. Through every presentation, Larios hopes to inspire children to learn about animals. "Through our understanding of animals we can learn how to take care of them," explained Larios to her audience.
Jennifer Palma, an employee who has worked at the Grand Terrace Library for the past four years was on hand to assist the many children in attendance. Plama encourages families to visit the library throughout the summer for the variety of events that will occur.
"All the events are free and they are great for families that cannot afford expensive vacations," explains Palma, "it's an easy way to experience something fun." In addition to attending the events, Palma also hopes to encourage children to participate in the 2014 Summer Reading Program. As a library employee, Palma understands the importance of reading over summer.
"The program is a great was to keep kids reading and to keep their skills up," says Palma, "Summer has just started and everyone is welcome."
Applications to join are currently available throughout county libraries.
