The City of Colton Fire Department proudly announces the retirement of Fire Chief Ray Bruno after nearly three decades of distinguished and dedicated service to the Colton community. Chief Bruno’s leadership, commitment, and unwavering dedication have left a lasting impact on the department and the residents he served.

Chief Bruno began his career with the Colton Fire Department in August 1996 as a Firefighter/Paramedic, responding to fires, medical emergencies, and other critical incidents. Over the course of his career, he steadily rose through the ranks, serving as Fire Engineer, Fire Captain, Battalion Chief/Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Chief, and ultimately Fire Chief.

Prior to his career in Colton, Chief Bruno served in the United States Marine Corps, where he developed the leadership and discipline that would define his career in public service. He also gained valuable experience as a seasonal wildland firefighter with the United States Forest Service.

Reflecting on his career, Chief Bruno shared:

“I am truly thankful to the City of Colton, the residents of Colton, and the men and women of the Colton Fire Department, you have given me more than I could ever give back. Serving the community has been an honor and a privilege. I am proud of everything we have accomplished together and know the department is in good hands moving forward.”

City Manager, Bill Smith stated ““Chief Bruno has given his career to the City of Colton, culminating in his fine leadership as Fire Chief.  It has been my honor working alongside him, and I wish him the best in his well-earned retirement.”

Following Chief Bruno’s retirement, the City is pleased to announce the promotion of Deputy Fire Chief Justin Weems to the position of Fire Chief. Deputy Chief Weems brings over 20 years of experience in the fire service, having joined the Colton Fire Department in 2004. His leadership, commitment, and vision for the future will guide the department in continuing to provide exemplary service to the community. Chief Weems will assume his new role effective April 11, 2026.

The City of Colton extends its sincere appreciation to Chief Bruno for his years of service and dedication. A retirement ceremony will be held on April 8, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. to honor his career and contributions.

The City of Colton invites the community to join us in celebrating Chief Bruno’s remarkable career and welcoming Chief Weems.
