Forest Service Issues Temporary Partial Closure of Alpine Pedal Path

SAN BERNARDINO>> The San Bernardino National Forest has posted notice that there will be a partial closure of the Alpine Pedal Path for the construction phases of the Alpine Pedal Path Improvement Project beginning May 15 thru June 30, 2017.

The path will be open Saturdays and Sundays through the construction period.  Please be aware that during the construction period, the Alpine Pedal Path will have a rough unpaved surface not suitable for beginner cyclists, narrow tires, or those with limited mobility.

The section of trail closure begins at Stanfield Cutoff on the east, and extends along the north shore of Big Bear Lake to North Shore Lane, (across from Serrano Campground) on the west.

The Juniper Point Picnic Area parking lot will be closed Monday through Friday, but open on the weekends. All facilities at the Juniper Point Picnic Area will be open Saturdays and Sundays and requires a valid Recreation Pass. The Alpine Pedal Path will remain open from Serrano Campground to its terminus on the west.

The closure will be temporarily lifted on May 19th to provide public access during the Amgen cycling event.

This is the second phase in the Improvement project, which will be occurring over the next year to improve the recreational experience of users. Replacement of two bridges has been completed, and repaving and widening the path between North Shore Lane and the western terminus (near the Big Bear Solar Observatory) is planned for the near future.

A multi-funded partnership developed between the US Forest Service, the City of Big Bear Lake, Big Bear Municipal Water District, Southern CA Mountains Foundation and California Land Management is providing for the repaving and widening the path to 12 feet, installing interpretive signage, and paving a connector to the Meadow’s Edge Picnic Area.

For questions about this temporary closure on the Mountaintop Ranger District, please call or write Jeremy Dorsey at 909-382-2837 or jdorsey02@fs.fed.us
