CBU's Tyson Miller Builds Victorious Resume from Cape Cod League

After a dominant summer campaign in the prestigious Cape Cod League, buzz is building about California Baptist University's Tyson Miller. The incoming junior and right-handed pitcher was listed on D1Baseball.com's Top 25 Cape Cod Prospects in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft class. Miller was listed as D1Baseball.com's No. 24 prospect on Monday, as he separated himself from the 424 players who competed in the Cape Cod League this summer. The La Quinta native spent a portion of his summer turning heads for the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod League. He was the only non-NCAA Division I product listed among the top-50 Cape Cod prospects by the site that describes itself as the "home for college baseball." In five games with the Whitecaps, Miller made four starts and held some of the country's best players and prospects at bay to boast an impressive 1.44 earned-run average over 25 innings. In a paywall-protected article, D1Baseball.com described him as a "true eye opener" with a four-pitch arsenal, including a strong fastball and slider, plus curveball and developing change-up. With an ability to work the lower half of the zone, a "projectable frame" and late movement on his pitches, the article predicts scouting of Miller will only heat up in the 2016 season at CBU - similar to how it has been for recent Lancer starters (Trevor Oaks, 2014; Adam Hofacket, 2015). "There's going to be more velocity on the way as he strengthens his frame, and with these flashes of quality secondaries, you are going to find many scouts coming away incredibly intrigued by his upside," the article states. This is not the first bit of praise Miller's reaped for his resume in Cape Cod. The Whitecaps sealed a playoff berth thanks in large part to his right arm, as he struck out 11 batters in eight innings of a 4-1 victory over the then-league-leading Orleans Firebirds. He did not allow a walk and gave up just the one run en route to earning the Cape Cod League's Coca-Cola Pitcher of the Week honor on Aug. 4. Overall, Miller boasted a 2-1 record and produced more strikeouts (29) than allowed base runners (16 hits, six walks). It was icing on the cake after a strong sophomore season with the Lancers when he posted a 7-3 record in 13 starts and 14 appearances. He held opposing teams to a .236 average and struck 85 batters, while walking 22, in more than 86 innings.
