Students Take Home Gold

COLTON AND GRAND TERRACE>> It is estimated that 200 students in kindergarten through 12th grade competed in the 29th Annual Colton Joint Unified School District Science Fair Monday, Feb. 6. Students from all over the district implemented the scientific method and conducted experiments to compete in the science fair. A total of 39 students from CJUSD took home gold medals from the science fair. In grades fourth through fifth, the winners were Christopher Gomez, Luis Rodrigues and Santos Rios from Alice Birney Elementary School; Keira Strahan from Cooley Ranch Elementary School; Emma Ponce from Grand Terrace Elementary School; Norissa Rendon from Grant Elementary School; Amanda Krejci from Ruth Grimes Elementary School; Edward Rodriguez from Jurupa Vista Elementary School; and Zoe Lopez Forsythe and Ashmina Griffith from Reche Canyon Elementary School. Gold medalists from the sixth through eighth grade winners were Ryland Rodriguez, Joshua Juarez and Joseph Aure from Cooley Ranch Elementary School; Trent Tracy from Crestmore Elementary School; Joe Medina, Samantha Tovar, Herbert Vega and Farid Galindo from Joe Baca Middle School; Samantha Diaz from Jurupa Elementary School; and Francisco Lafiandra from Mary B. Lewis Elementary School. Other gold medalists from the grade level include Christopher Sprouse from Reche Canyon Elementary School; Ajada Peralta and Kevin Garcia from Ruth O. Harris Middle School; Alan Hernandez and Melody McKenna from Sycamore Hills Elementary School. Gold medalist winners from grades ninth through twelfth were Andrew Lopez, Mauricio Munoz, Samuel Rivera, Alex Sanchez and Ulysses Leon from Bloomington High School; Kevin Hernandez Rosales and Vivian Sosa from Colton High School; and Britny Santos, Candie Sanchez, Hailey Myers and Joanna Guerrero from Grand Terrace High School. Gold medalist winners from kindergarten through third grade were Vanessa Arispuro from Cooley Ranch Elementary School; Charlie Patrick Flores from Crestmore Elementary School; Dominic Lomeli from Michael D’Arcy Elementary School; Angelo Douglas from Grand Terrace Elementary School; Carlos Perez-Quintero from Mary B. Lewis Elementary School; Iseah Oceguera from Lincoln Elementary School; Katie Jones from Reche Canyon Elementary School; and Madison James from Gerald Smith Elementary School. Students who became gold medal winners in grades 4-12 will prepare to participate in the San Bernardino, Inyo and Mono Counties SIM Science and Engineering Fair. The regional fair will take place on Tuesday, April 4 at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana. Winners of the SIM fair will advance to the California State Science Fair which takes place on April 24 and 25 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

A residence shows visible damage from flooding, mud and debris following severe winter storms that began Dec. 23, which brought heavy rain and debris flows to mountain and high desert communities across San Bernardino County. This week, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors approved recovery-related fee waivers to help eligible property owners repair and rebuild as response and long-term recovery efforts continue.
