Progress at Home: How VA Loma Linda Reflects a Nationwide Upgrade in Veteran Services

For residents of Loma Linda and surrounding cities, the Veterans Affairs healthcare system in our city is more than just a building — it’s a lifeline for those who have served our country, and it’s now part of a nationwide story of progress. The VA Loma Linda Healthcare System is slated for front lobby renovations to improve access to the Veterans Resource Center, part of the department’s ongoing Non?Recurring Maintenance (NRM) program. This is just one piece of a larger nationwide effort, fueled by an additional $800 million in funding, bringing total NRM spending to $2.8 billion in fiscal year?2025. These funds are helping VA facilities across the country upgrade everything — from HVAC and electrical systems, to clinic spaces and patient service areas.

The impact of these improvements goes hand in hand with historic milestones in care and service. A recent VA press release revealed that the backlog of disability and pension claims is now consistently below 100,000 for the first time, since May 2020, marking a 63% reduction, since January 2025. Secretary Doug Collins praised the accomplishment: "VA’s claims processing productivity is the highest it has ever been, and we look forward to continuing to provide record levels of service to Veterans and VA beneficiaries.”

Nationwide, these improvements are part of a broader effort to expand access and modernize care. The VA has opened 33 new health care facilities, offered over 2.2 million appointments outside of normal operating hours, and permanently housed 51,936 homeless veterans in fiscal year?2025 — all record-setting achievements.

For those of us living in Loma Linda, it’s easy to feel proud. Our local VA facility is part of a national network undergoing transformation, ensuring that veterans receive the timely, modern, and compassionate care they deserve. Renovated lobbies, upgraded technology, and improved clinic access mean veterans and their families can navigate the system more easily, while the nationwide reduction in claim backlogs shows that the department is keeping its promises to those who served.

In short, Loma Linda and surrounding cities are not just benefiting from improvements within our city — we’re witnessing a national commitment to veterans that resonates right here at home. The work is ongoing, but the results are already visible, and our community can take pride in the VA’s continuing mission to serve those who served us.
