As the new school year begins, the safety of students navigating their way to and from school has become a primary concern for parents, educators, and city officials in Grand Terrace. With more students walking or biking to school, ensuring safe passage at crosswalks is a top priority for the community.

The Importance of Vigilance

Crosswalks near schools are bustling during the morning and afternoon hours when students are commuting. These high-traffic areas require not only careful attention from drivers but also the presence of dedicated crossing guards and well-marked pedestrian pathways.

Local authorities have emphasized the importance of vigilance at crosswalks, urging drivers to slow down, obey traffic signals, and watch for young pedestrians, especially in school zones.

Recent Safety Measures

In response to concerns from the community, Grand Terrace has implemented several safety measures aimed at protecting students at crosswalks. These include:

  1. Enhanced Crosswalk Markings: The city has updated crosswalk markings near schools, making them more visible with bright colors and reflective paint. This ensures that drivers can easily spot crossing areas even in low-light conditions.

  2. Increased Crossing Guard Presence: Additional crossing guards have been deployed at key intersections during peak hours. These trained professionals play a crucial role in guiding students safely across busy streets and ensuring that drivers adhere to traffic laws.

  3. Flashing School Zone Signs: New flashing signs have been installed in school zones to alert drivers when they are entering areas with high pedestrian activity. These signs serve as a constant reminder to reduce speed and be prepared to stop for crossing students.

  4. Educational Campaigns: Schools in Grand Terrace have launched educational programs to teach students about road safety. These programs cover essential topics such as using crosswalks correctly, understanding traffic signals, and making eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
