Terry Keiser, a retired physical therapist and longtime Grand Terrace resident, discussed his candidacy for the Grand Terrace City Council. Keiser, who has lived in the community since 1986, expressed a deep connection to the city and a desire to contribute to its future well-being.

Background and Motivation

Keiser shared his background, highlighting his career as a physical therapist, having graduated from Loma Linda University in 1977. He has lived in Grand Terrace for over three decades, raising his two daughters in the community. Reflecting on his involvement in the city, Keiser recalled advocating for the construction of the local high school, a project that was completed after his daughters had already graduated. He emphasized his connection to the city, saying, "I fought hard for the high school to be built here. I went to the City Council and even spoke there."

Now retired for several years, Keiser is motivated to give back to the community that he believes has provided a safe and supportive environment for his family. “I like the way it was here,” he said. “I raised my girls here safely. I felt safe always. I feel like Grand Terrace is on the right path, and I’d like to continue with that.”

Goals and Vision

When asked about his goals and priorities if elected to the City Council, Keiser expressed a strong interest in maintaining the positive direction in which Grand Terrace is heading. One of his key priorities is supporting Measure M, a local sales tax initiative aimed at boosting the city's revenue. He said, "I am for Measure M because we're more for the city and to raise our sales tax up to what the other cities are." Keiser also emphasized the need for responsible growth and economic development, mentioning that he would like to see more retail businesses brought to the area. However, he raised concerns about the potential traffic impact of a new housing development, stating, "I'm a little worried that traffic might end up like Reche Canyon here. I think they need to review or look at that, possibly."

In terms of working with fellow City Council members, Keiser expressed confidence, noting his lifelong experience in dealing with the public. “I feel like I’ve been dealing with the public all my life and gotten along with them,” he said, adding that he expects to have a positive working relationship with other council members.

Economic Development and Social Issues

Keiser praised the city’s balanced budget, stating that it is something he wants to maintain if elected. He also reiterated his support for Measure M and suggested that the revenue from it could potentially go towards increased law enforcement. On social issues, Keiser took a firm stance on homelessness, a challenge faced by many neighboring cities. “I’m glad Grand Terrace does not have homeless, and we want to keep it that way,” he stated.

Although supportive of the city’s current trajectory, Keiser voiced concerns about overdevelopment, particularly with the planned construction of  70 homes. He questioned whether the area’s infrastructure could handle the increased population and traffic.

Leadership Experience

Keiser brings significant leadership experience to his candidacy, having run a private physical therapy practice for 18 years in a Riverside retirement community. He described his role in overseeing the business and working with patients, demonstrating his ability to manage responsibilities effectively.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Keiser envisions Grand Terrace continuing on its current path, with a focus on maintaining the community's safety and quality of life. "Hopefully, they'll be on the same path as they are right now," he said, expressing optimism for the city's future. He also emphasized the importance of Measure M in securing the city's financial health. “If Measure M passes, I think they'll be sitting well,” he noted.

Legacy

When asked about the legacy he hopes to leave if elected, Keiser responded simply: "That he was able to give back to his community." He hopes to be remembered for his role in maintaining Grand Terrace as a “great bedroom community” and for continuing to foster the qualities that make it a safe and desirable place to live.

In closing, Keiser’s candidacy is grounded in his love for his community and his desire to see it thrive. His experience, local knowledge, and commitment to the city suggest that he would bring a thoughtful and pragmatic approach to the City Council if elected.
