Summer's Busy for Cub Scouts Pack 242

It’s been a busy summer so far for the boys in Grand Terrace Cub Scouts Pack 242. This year, the Pack combined their annual graduation with a camp-out at Chino’s Prado Regional Park from June 28 through 30. The weekend was packed with Scout activities, including fire safety, campfire building, knot tying, map reading and learning how to use a compass. Scouts also participated in team-building exercises, including one instance where one Scout was blindfolded and another directed him through an obstacle course. Scouts also played games of baseball, flag football and beat the 104° heat with various water games and activities, making use of the campground’s water area, where the boys were able to cool off. Meeting up with a Pack from Redlands by coincidence, the packs participated in a tug o’ war. During the parents’ tug o’ war, the rope snapped and the parents went rolling on the ground. A flag retirement ceremony was held after dinner during one of the camp nights, with Pack 242 Cubmaster Bryan Hegardt reading the history of the flag. He explained to the boys the proper way to retire a flag too worn to be used anymore—according to law, a worn flag is to be burned as a sign of respect. Some parents and scouts were emotional watching the ceremony. Aside from record-breaking temperatures, it was an awesome weekend. Additionally, on the previous weekend, the Pack played a friendly soccer game against the TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer), a community-based recreational program designed to help athletes with physical and mental disabilities participate in soccer.
