At the recent Grand Parlor (statewide convention) of the Native Sons of the Golden West, two local members were elected to statewide office. Doug Calkins (Beaumont) advanced from Grand Third to Grand Second Vice President, and Garry Devlin (Rialto) was elected Grand Outside Sentinel. Grand Parlor, held in Redding, CA, was attended by about 230 delegates, plus additional guests for a total of almost 400. Arrowhead Parlor was represented by Calkins, Devlin, Andy and Kay Anderson (San Bernardino) Barbara Kimball (Highland), Sherry Livingston (Rialto), Carol Robb (Grand Terrace), and Jim Smith (San Bernardino). One of the first actions taken by the delegates was to approve a resolution honoring the late TV personality Huell Howser as an honorary Native Son, for his work in making California more aware of its golden heritage. Each year the Native Sons award scholarships to outstanding high school students seeking both college and career–technical education. This year’s scholarship committee was chaired by Barbara Kimball. Carol Robb was also a member of the committee. The Native Son’s Charitable Foundation donates thousands of dollars annually to several cleft palate clinics around the state. One of the big fundraisers is at Grand Parlor, which this year raised over $106,000 to be split among St. John’s Santa Monica, Sutter Memorial, and UC San Francisco hospitals. Arrowhead Parlor was also recognized as an honor parlor for its membership growth, and Jim Smith was honored for the number of new members he recruited. Garry Devlin was the top “Lucky Calendar” salesman. During the Wednesday “Play Day,” many competed in various events. Chris Leon placed second in trapshooting.
