Grand Terrace High School’s (GTHS) Titan football program hosted their first annual football Kick-Off BBQ and Car Show hosted at the GTHS Titan field parking lot August 31. Volunteers from Calvary Chapel the Brook Church cooked hamburgers while a DJ played music as community members checked out the various Corvette models presented by Corvettes West of Colton, all lined up for display. A variety of vendors were also out selling products including various kinds of Titan-themed merchandise. After the festivities were opened with the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the National Anthem, Grand Terrace Mayor Walt Stanckiewitz explained, “I’m so excited. I cannot wait to cheer on the Titans next Friday.” Mayor Pro Tem Bernardo Sandoval said, “This is a wonderful community event that we are all supporting. I’m pleased to see the community of Grand Terrace, as well as others, coming out to support the Titans as they get prepared for this upcoming season.” As flavored snow cones were being prepared and sold by the GTHS Cheer Squad, the GTHS Freshman football team members, along with freshman football coach Eddie Montoya, were making numerous attempts to dunk each other in a pool of water by throwing a football towards a bull’s-eye. Carlos Ulloa, owner of a classic and original 1964 Lincoln Continental, and father of one of the varsity players, said, “One of the best things about today is seeing how committed the parents and community are, and witnessing the support and service of everyone to make sure all of us are having a great time before the real kick-off begins.” As families, friends, and participants continued to engage in the event, Sally Lopez, along with her son and daughter, Eddie and CeCe Lopez, noted, “The community service of everyone here is outstanding, and even though it is scorching hot, it is a great excuse to get out of the house with my family to support our city’s first high school football team.” Selling the Titans school merchandise to families and fans, physical education teacher and GTHS Girls Varsity Soccer coach Ryan Pacheco said, “It is a pretty cool community setting, bringing everyone together and allowing everyone to get pumped up before next week’s football game.” Grand Terrace High School football booster club president Jeanette Valadez shared, “I am pleasantly surprised about today’s turn out. The food, vendors, participants, and community came out together to enjoy today and that was the goal! The goal is to have festivities such as this to kick off this year’s football season and get everybody involved.” Grand Terrace High School will kick off the season at GTHS this Friday evening.
